<p>Join us for a special Earth Day-themed program with guest speaker Doreen Abubakar, an award-winning Connecticut environmental leader, nature educator, and founder of the New Haven-based Community Placemaking Engagement Network (CPEN). Doreen has been a leader in diversifying the environmental movement for decades since getting involved with the organization Natural Guard in New Haven in the 1980s. After initiating the West River Water Festival and CPEN, most recently she co-founded a native plant nursery in Newhallville (called "Urbanscapes") that teaches horticultural skills and eco-preneurship to urban youth. In 2022, Doreen was the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement award from Audubon Connecticut.</p>
<p>She will give a presentation on her work as an "urban environmentalist" and the perspective she has gained on bringing youth and diversity into the movement to protect the planet.</p>
<p>The event begins at 6:30 with coffee and tea, and the presentation at 7pm.</p>
<p><em><strong>DOREEN ABUBAKAR BIO</strong></em></p>
<p><em>Doreen is an award-winning environmental leader and educator working at the intersection of environmental justice, outdoor education, community placemaking and public health.</em></p>
<p><em>For decades Doreen has been an environmental educator leading 4-H programs and teaching fishing for the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP). In 2011 she founded the West River Water Festival, a popular annual summertime event featuring canoe rides and watershed education.</em></p>
<p><em>In 2012, Doreen created the Community Placemaking and Engagement Network (CPEN) as a catalyst for community relationship-building, leadership development and public health awareness in the low-income Newhallville neighborhood of New Haven. Focusing on family fitness and outdoors recreation as positive vectors for the social determinants of health, CPEN established the Newhallville Learning Corridor along the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail, a linear park and designated section of the East Coast Greenway. The Learning Corridor features a resident-maintained public greenspace and Audubon-certified pollinator garden, access to the linear park, a space for festivals and community gatherings, and a bicycle storage facility where community members can access bicycles for use on the trail and in the community. The Learning Corridor also features annual programs such as the springtime Pedometer Challenge for walkers, weekly maintenance work-days in June
and July, the Harvest Festival in October, holiday sing-along in December, and will soon host a farmers’ market to bring fresh fruits and vegetables into Newhallville, a "food desert" where access to quality produce is limited.</em></p>
<p><em>In 2022, Doreen was the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement award from Audubon Connecticut.</em></p>
<p><em>Doreen is a mother of five, a grandmother, and a lifelong resident of New Haven.</em></p>
