<p>Should the Connecticut state constitution be amended to give residents the right to pure air and water, and the right to a healthy and stable climate? Should the U.S. Constitution safeguard those rights? Is this practical and how would it work legally and politically?</p>
<p>In recent years a robust political movement has arisen to enshrine basic environmental protections -- such as the right to clean air, clean water, and a stable climate -- into state constitutions as fundamental rights that every citizen should enjoy. Montana, Pennsylvania, and <a href="https://nygreen.pace.edu/">New York</a> have all approved "Green Amendments," and several other states are currently considering them. The campaign to pass a Green Amendment in Connecticut began in 2022.</p>
<p>The goal of the <a href="https://forthegenerations.org/the-green-amendment/">Green Amendment for the Generations</a> movement is to create a political movement sweeps the nation and secures for all people constitutional recognition and protection of their inalienable rights to pure water, clean air, a stable climate and healthy environments. The movement seeks to inspire and support pursuit and passage of self-executing, environmental rights amendments in the Bill of Rights section of every state constitution across the U.S. and ultimately at the federal level.</p>
<p>Join us as we hear from scientist and activist Dr. Kimberly Stoner, currently the Advocacy Director for the Connecticut chapter of the Northeast Organic Farming Association (CT-NOFA), about the effort to pass a Green Amendment in Connecticut.</p>
<p>This is our monthly meeting, held on the third Monday of the month. We usually start with half an hour of coffee and conversation at 6:30 PM, followed by the main program after brief announcements at 7:00 PM.</p>
