An opportunity to find out what ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) of Connecticut is doing locally and to engage its Executive Director Stephen Glassman with your own thoughts, will occur on Monday night February 8, at 6:30 pm at the monthly meeting of the Humanists and Freethinkers of Fairfield County, held at the Silver Star Diner, 210 CT Ave, Norwalk. It is free and open to the public.

Steve Glassman is a former state cabinet official and non-profit executive with a long history of working for human rights. A graduate of Brown and Yale universities, he served with the ACLU and state commissions in Maryland and Pennsylvania before becoming Connecticut ACLU Executive Director in December 2014.

“The ACLU has essentially one permanent client, the Bill of Rights embodied in the Constitution of the United States.” says Mr. Glassman.

Its current priorities in Connecticut are focused on comprehensive Criminal Justice Reform, rectifying Racial Bias and Injustice, protecting First Amendment Rights and addressing Fourth Amendment Privacy concerns, expanding LGBT Rights while addressing attempts to reverse recent victories regarding same sex marriage through the expansion of religious exemption laws, and the ongoing importance of ensuring that Due Process and Equal Protection are continually respected. It is actively engaged in ensuring that the freedom to practice one’s religion and the freedom to not practice any religion are equally protected, particularly in a political climate where there is heightened pressure to favor one religion over another and to militate against those who practice no religion at all with the active intrusion of government at the state and federal levels.

The Humanists and Freethinkers of Fairfield County, Connecticut, espouses Reason and Compassion, seeks to promote Humanism and free thought in our community. It meets on the second Monday of each month, with speakers, discussion, and social time. Learn more at meetup.com/HFFCCT.
