David Schafer

Longtime USNH member David Schafer passed away peacefully at 91 years of age at Yale New Haven Hospital, St. Raphael’s campus, on January 10th after nearly beating Covid. David was once the pianist at USNH and his musical compositions for Reverend Wayne Shuttee, Reverend Dan Hotchkiss, Reverend Glenn Snowden, Reverend Kathleen McTigue, and Reverend Megan Lloyd Joiner were beautifully inspired by each minister’s choice of a favorite poem. A devout humanist (“an atheist who shaves,” he would fondly explain) he was the Unitarian Humanist Association president from 2003 to 2010. From co-founding Wichita’s Congress of Racial Equality (with his beloved wife, June, who predeceased him in 2020) in 1949 to co-founding the Connecticut Humanist Association in 1989, David truly believed in humanism’s progressive philosophy of life that “without supernatural beliefs, affirms our ability and responsibility to lead ethical lives of personal fulfillment that aspires to the greater good.” A principled, brilliant and remarkable man… he would “occasionally” utter a pun. For this, he is most lovingly forgiven by his friends and family. His children, Martin and Margaret, honor him by following in his footsteps.
